HP BladeSystem c7000

Current Status

Eight (8) virtual machines are running on two blades for general computing needs. Each VM has 1 CPU, 896MB RAM, a 16GB virtual disk, and running openSUSE Linux 10.2. You can access these machines by ssh vm[1-8] from kabru.

Hardware

The BladeSystem includes 16 blades. Each blade has 2 dual-core CPUs, 4GB RAM, 2 hard drives, and 2 GbE ports. On the enclosure, there are 1 GbE switch, 1 GbE pass-thru module, 1 Onboard Administrator. The whole system is powered by 6 power supplies and cooled by 10 fans. The details are given below:

  • (1) Smart Array E200i disk controller (64MB read cache)
  • (2) 146GB SAS 10Krpm small-form factor (SFF) hard disk drive
  • (2) NC370i G!bE network interfaces
  • (1) Integrated Lights Out 2 (iLO 2), Standard Blade Edition

History

Feb. 1, 2007

  • Received the HP BladeSystem c-Class system, including an enclosure and 16 blades.
  • Kyu-han, Steve, and others moved the BladeSystem to the lab.

Feb. 19, 2007

  • Received a power distribution unit (Geist Manufacturing, model: XPB308-153IN6TL21).
  • Howard installed a full-length bracket (included with the PDU) on a rack.

Feb. 20, 2007

First installation session

  • Install the PDU
  • Install the enclosure
  • Install blades and fans
  • Connect enclosure to existing RTCL network
  • Connect enclosure to PDU
  • Connect PDU to wall plug (208V)
  • Power up the BladeSystem
  • Insight Display initial setup
  • Onboard Administrator first time setup

OpenSUSE Linux 10.2 is installed on one blade (blade 1).

OpenSUSE Linux 10.2 is installed on two blades (blade 3 and 4) and set up as Xen host machines. 8 VMs (vm 1 to 8), each has 1 CPU, 896MB RAM, and a 16GB virtual disk, are loaded with the same Linux distribution and set up for general computing needs.

The firmware of the Onboard Administrator is upgraded to 1.30.

Mar. 5, 2007

VMware Server is installed on top of OpenSUSE running on blade 1.

Mar. 8, 2007

VMware ESX Server 3.0.1 is installed on two blades (blade 5 and 6). VMware Virtual Center 2 is running on a WinXP VM hosted in VMware server on blade 1.

Apr. 12, 2007

The firmware of the Ethernet Blade Switch is upgraded to 2.0.0.

Dec. 20, 2007

Upgrade the iLO2 firmware on all 16 blades to version 1.42 (Oct. 3, 2007) and the Onboard Administrator firmware to version 2.10 (Nov. 28, 2007). The firmware of the Ethernet Blade Switch is also upgraded to 2.0.4.
