Location service is crucial to heterogeneous sensor networks consisting of stationary sensor nodes and mobile devices. We explore design choices and parameter configurations for location services to achieve high energy-efficiency and packet-delivery ratio. Our main contributions are (1) an in-depth analysis of conditions for a generic location service to achieve a high packet-delivery ratio; (2) design optimization that achieves a significant reduction of the location-service overhead; (3) a technique of adapting the location service to the rate and distribution of data sources to achieve overall energy efficiency, and derivation of the break-even point of data rate for such adaptation.
