Multi-Radio Wireless Mesh Networks

Project Description

We have investigated the problems of frequent network failures due to severe channel interference and varying QoS requirements in multi-hop wireless mesh networks. We are developing algorithms and protocols that effectively handle such network failures through dynamic and adaptive configuration of network resources (e.g., multi-radio, MIMO).

Multi-Radio Wireless Mesh Network Testbed

We have built a multi-hop wireless mesh network that has following salient characteristics
  • Small form-factor: Small Soekris 4826-50 wireless router has been used for each mesh node, and it is easy to deploy.
  • Multi-radio capability: Each mesh node has two mini-PCI slots and is equipped with IEEE 802.11a/b/g combo cards.
  • Real-life testbed: More than 20 mesh nodes have been deployed in the fourth floor of the Computer Science and Engineering building at The University of Michigan
  • A mesh node uses Soekris board as shown in below
