Setting up Windows XP VM

Problem

Windows XP VMs can currently only run on VMware Server. While setting up a Windows XP VM, the VM stalls or runs very slow during Windows setup.

Solution

The solution is to disable the CPU frequency scaling in the host OS. In openSUSE Linux 10.2, one needs to add "CPUFREQ=no" to the kernel parameter.

Reference

Guest OS stalls (or VERY slow) upon startup
